The sinister Mr Shaitana boasts a private collection of murderers who have never been caught, and gathers four of them for an evening of bridge with four sleuths — Hercule Poirot among them. Before the night is out Shaitana is stabbed in his chair, killed by one of the four players in the room. With nothing to go on but the score-cards and the psychology of the game, Poirot must read the murder in the bidding.
